MINUTES

I. Meeting was called to order at 4:05 pm by President Linda Tuttle.

II. Agenda. Agenda approved unanimously.

III. Minutes. Minutes of the April 10 meeting were approved unanimously.

IV. President’s Report

Linda reported on political activities. Natomas, Grant, San Juan join in Mayor’s Race in support of Heather Fargo. She reported on the Budget crisis. No good is going to come out of this. State budget impacts district/teachers. Cuts will come. PARS will impact SCTA reps. Many will take the retirement option. Last Saturday was a busy Saturday with Scholarship/PIC meetings. Linda met with known school board candidates and others politically active in school board elections. Linda urges reps to inform members about their right to representation in disciplinary meetings

Appreciation -- thank you to reps.

V. Treasurer’s Report. Bob Nosler presented the Financial Report. Moved on behalf of the Board. No dues increase from SCTA but CTA/NEA will increase. Motion from Budget Committee to establish a Major Donor line item in budget for political action. Letters of notification will be sent to homes. Approved unanimously.

VI. Committee Reports

Elections. Jean Briggs reported. Congratulations to reps for good election process. New officers were announced.

PIC. Owen Jackman reported. There will be a press conference May 12th at 4:00 p.m. at Heather Fargo Campaign headquarters - 17th & I Streets. On May 21st there is a dinner at Casa Garden for campaign candidates. Interviews for candidates were held on Saturday, recommended to Board on Tuesday and then out to members. Reported by Cris Johnson. May 31st is a walk for Heather Fargo. Thanks to those who were on the Interview Committee.

Scholarship. Sandy Olson reported. Committee met to read applications. Recommendations to go to the Board and info will be sent to all. Thanks to the team.

VII. Executive Director Reports

Manuel Villarreal presented a letter from Linda regarding the Political meeting on May 21st at Casa Garden. Reps were urged to bring another teacher or community member. Call SCTA to RSVP.

Passed out SCUSD Board resolution 2518 adopted by Board to approve layoffs (174.9). 15 teacher layoffs were rescinded by errors made in the process. Budget decisions will need to be made by District by June 30. Very serious problem. SCTA does not want to down-play. Other districts may be eliminating more administrators.

Seth Bramble shared the 10 minute meeting agenda with reps. Budget information was shared and information regarding ed coalition that is started: "Together for CA’s future". Statewide layoffs account for many jobs. CA spending is at bottom nationwide. Prop 98 could be suspended.

Getting Down to Fact study showed education should get 40 % more. Reps were urged to talk with members regarding budget. There will be 2 more professional development opportunities at SCTA on May 20 and May 27. Use Day of the Teacher to turn in postcards at Capitol. Bring political junkies to May 21 event. Call your legislator with CTA talking points. Video on You Tube to determine community interest. Video will show teachers writing postcards to legislators.

VIII. Adjournment. Meeting adjourned at 5:30 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,

Marcie Launey for

Scott Smith, Secretary
